La familia de Andy se mudará de casa y los juguetes hacen una reunión para afinar los últimos detalles de la mudanza. Al término de la reunión se enteran de que la madre de Andy adelantó su fiesta de cumpleaños para ese día.
La mayoría de los juguetes tiene miedo de ser reemplazado por algún regalo de Andy. Woody, el juguete preferido de Andy, llama a la calma y envía a un grupo de soldados verdes a la fiesta de cumpleaños para que nombren los regalos que reciba Andy.
Cuando todos los regalos se acaban y ningún juguete ha aparecido, la mamá de Andy saca un regalo que tenía escondido y se lo pasa a su hijo. Antes de que los soldados informen la identidad del regalo los niños suben a la habitación de Andy corriendo y los juguetes vuelven a sus posiciones originales.
El regalo que recibió Andy era un juguete llamado Buzz Lightyear, una figura de acción espacial basada en el protagonista de una serie de televisión.
