C.J. Nichols (Jesse Metcalfe) un periodista desesperado por encontrar una historia impactante que le permita conservar su trabajo,decide autoinculparse como responsable de un asesinato. Su objetivo es desenmascarar al poderoso fiscal del distrito, Martin Hunter (Michael Douglas) que ha medrado en su carrera manipulando pruebas y encarcelando a inocentes. La joven ayudante del fiscal Ella (Amber Tamblyn),se ve dividida entre el plan de C.J. y la ambición del fiscal.
